On the 1st and 2nd of May 2012 there is an unconference being held in Liverpool – OggCamp 10. An excerpt from the site describes what this is:

“More formal conferences have the usual people speaking every time; an unconference is an opportunity to interact with new and interesting people. You are guaranteed to learn something, but we have no idea what! At an unconference there won’t be a published list of speakers before the event. Watch this site though, and we might publish names of people who have said they’re planning on turning up and giving a talk. And that can include you!”

If you’re going, you might want to go a day earlier and attend the “special free cuture gig” – good company, good music, good vibes what more do you want to start the weekend!

Ii’ll be going, not to do a talk, but to revel in the atmosphere of what is going to be an awesome event. If you want to say hello, give me a slap, buy me a beer, then come along…..preferably not to do the slap You can’t really miss me i’m quite tall Hope to see you there!

I also like gwibber, and heard Jono mention that a version with column support is going into Lucid. But i want that now…right now dagnamit Well that’s easy as well, just add the daily PPA build to your software sources, to quote from the PPA site for Gwibber – https://launchpad.net/~gwibber-daily/+archive/ppa

You can update your system with unsupported packages from this untrusted PPA by adding ppa:gwibber-daily/ppa to your system’s Software Sources.

If you know me then you’ll know i’m a fan of twitter, but i’m not a great fan of the current linux clients gwibber. I am however a great fan of tweetdeck, but alas it’s a real pain to get working as you have to install Adobe Air first…yuck.

So what’s the alternative…..well let me mention the one i’m currently using, it’s web based so there is nothing to install. What am i using? http://hootsuite.com.

Put it simply is like tweetdeck but web based, ok so there are things that are missing from it such as the facebook integration, but that’s ok.

Have more that one social networking site? yeah i do, twitter, facebook, identi.ca etc etc. The good thing about this application is that it supports http://ping.fm and therefore updates all of them when you create a tweet….great news…

So far i like it, i hope you will to

Nottingham is getting its own Girl Geek Dinners, which bring together women who work in technical — and traditionally male — environments. Girl Geek Dinners were founded in 2005 in London, by Sarah Blow. Now a global phenomenon, there are over 53 groups internationally including Japan, Iceland and Malaysia.

Now ‘Nottingham Girl Geek Dinners’ will provide support to women in the area’s strong technology, science and engineering sectors and female entrepreneurs across the region.

What: Want to know a bit more about what a Girl Geek Dinner is?

When: Monday 3rd August @ 7pm

Where: Fat Cats Restaurant

Cost: £10 (this is the cost for food)

Why: Our speaker for this evening is Kate Bolin who is a Nottingham based web designer, likes web standards and accessibility but is happiest when up to her elbows in CSS. She is also a prolific knitter. You can find out more about Kate on her entertaining blog: http://www.katemonkey.co.uk/.

Every year the website that is a regular stomping groud for all proffesional web designers; A List Apart, runs a web survey to look at the current industry around the globe. Kate will be looking at the results from the most recent A List Apart Web Workers survey, to examine what it tells us about being a woman working in web design. Leave your preconceptions at the door as we have look at the industries and sectors that offer support for women in IT. Then expect a lively conversation afterwards.

Elsa Bartley, organiser of Nottingham’s Girl Geek Dinners has worked for nearly 10 years in the technology sector.

I’ve really enjoyed my professional career and I’d like to encourage more women into technology; I think we can bring a different perspective. I’m really looking forward to meeting other proffessional women and sharing experiences and expertise.

If you would like to know about future events or are interested in talking at Nottingham Girl Geek Dinners then you can find more information online at http://www.nottinghamgirlgeekdinners.co.uk.

But like many people I would love to see what’s going on, perhaps if you’re at an event and have a spare 10 mins with your laptop and a webcam and you have access to a wired lan port, or wireless, you could stream it using ustream, or livestream? then blog it, twitter it etc

I know I would watch just to see what’s going on, yeah i’m sad

I thought of this while watching a SELF stream by ubuntupodcasts Nick Ali

It was quite interesting seeing the amount of people that were around and the stalls, hmmm i’m trying to get to Lug Radio Live this year, I might do it myself there…..

However a few I’ve never heard off, which matters to me not one little bit. It makes me feel good that there are people out there willing to take a few minutes of their time just to make other people feel a little better. And to these folks, I take off my hat! and salute you. FOSS/Community++
