Twitter / Linux

Saturday, August 29th, 2009

If you know me then you’ll know i’m a fan of twitter, but i’m not a great fan of the current linux clients gwibber. I am however a great fan of tweetdeck, but alas it’s a real pain to get working as you have to install Adobe Air first…yuck.

So what’s the alternative…..well let me mention the one i’m currently using, it’s web based so there is nothing to install. What am i using? http://hootsuite.com.

Put it simply is like tweetdeck but web based, ok so there are things that are missing from it such as the facebook integration, but that’s ok.

Have more that one social networking site? yeah i do, twitter, facebook, identi.ca etc etc. The good thing about this application is that it supports http://ping.fm and therefore updates all of them when you create a tweet….great news…

So far i like it, i hope you will to :)

Don’t you just love it :) Yesterday I wasn’t having a good day, long story short it was crap :) Then out of the blue, there are comments on my blog from people telling me to keep my chin up, now some of these I know by reputation only, or from the planets I read. However a few I’ve never heard off, which matters to me not one little bit. It makes me feel good that there are people out there willing to take a few minutes of their time just to make other people feel a little better. And to these folks, I take off my hat! and salute you. FOSS/Community++

TIP#: If you see a post where someone isn’t feeling too hot, go give them a virtual hug, i know I will.

Backup or not to backup, that is the question.

Monday, May 18th, 2009

If you’re like me you never back up your computers…stupid i know, but hay, there isn’t really a lot i don’t mind loosing or reinstalling……until now.

I’ve a 7 month old, and unless you’re a parent, you’ll be amazed at the amount of photos or video you start to take, obviously these are priceless so i though i better think about backups.

First one is obvious, external hard drive, check done, backed up all photos and videos to it and moved it away from the computer incase it gets damaged.

DVD’s, yup just in case the hard drive fails here another way of backing up. Ok so i think i’m done, but hmmmm what if the house burns down? ahaa offsite backups…i suppose i could take a copy to the parents or inlaws, but i don’t want to have to do that everytime i get new photos or make another backup…..in comes SPIDEROAK and online backup service. To quote from their site

“SpiderOak provides an easy, secure and consolidated free online backup, sync, sharing, access & storage solution for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux (Ubuntu, Debian & Fedora) ”

WHAT? cross platform clients, including linux? awesome :) Works perfectly on my Ubuntu, Fedora, Windows 7, and Vista machines….

For the moment i’ve only gone for the free 2gb, but from what i’ve seen so far, it’s install client, select what to backup and go. The great thing is you can create sync’s, so if you want a photo folder to be the same on all pc’s you subscribe you can. Brill.

Once i’ve had a play i’ll decide if i want to go with the paid plan, which gives me 100GB for $10 a month, which if you’re using sterling is £6.60 a month, FTW!

Any one use this? Comments welcome.

*UPDATE*
I’ve decided to go with the paid service and currently am paying $9.99 for 100GB, which is totally plenty for my needs, so can’t recommend this highly enough, for now at least :) If you decide you want to try it out your self, then click the banner at the right hand side of the main website or this link – Spideroak

Women in Linux

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

My wife doesn’t really like linux, she’ll happily use it, but to be honest she’d rather use windows, now this isn’t a problem for me as i do, but it got me to thinking….so i’m currently reading this, perhaps you should too?

It’s also been Ada Lovelace Day, named for the world’s first computer programmer, Ada Lovelace. It’s interesting to me that while the first programmer was a woman, and all of the ENIAC programmers were women, there are so many more men than women in technology fields nowadays. Ada Lovelace Day is a day to highlight women who rock in the tech world. Since here in FOSS-land, the FLOSSPOLS survey reports that only 2% of developers are women, compared to 28% in the commercial sector, now i’m not going to write about a particular woman, but here is a list of women’s blogs I read quite often in no particular order

Fedora10 Upgrade + aMSN

Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

A friend and work collegue upgraded his desktop system to Fedora 10, which in itself is good news, however being a fan of aMSN it broke…FAIL :)

Being the genius that he is, he’s fixed it, scouring google there was no single tutorial to help but many each with a differnet fix. Cutting to the chase, he’s got it working again and you can see from his guide here.how he did it.
