1, Enable the RPM Fusion repo
2, yum install yum-presto
3, yum install broadcom-wl for my laptops wireless
4, yum upgrade

Pretty simple really :)

Technology / Geekness in Nottingham

Original Article

Nottingham’s Girl Geek Dinners supporting women in technology

Nottingham is getting its own Girl Geek Dinners, which bring together women who work in technical — and traditionally male — environments. Girl Geek Dinners were founded in 2005 in London, by Sarah Blow. Now a global phenomenon, there are over 53 groups internationally including Japan, Iceland and Malaysia.

Now ‘Nottingham Girl Geek Dinners’ will provide support to women in the area’s strong technology, science and engineering sectors and female entrepreneurs across the region.

What: Want to know a bit more about what a Girl Geek Dinner is?

When: Monday 3rd August @ 7pm

Where: Fat Cats Restaurant

Cost: £10 (this is the cost for food)

Why: Our speaker for this evening is Kate Bolin who is a Nottingham based web designer, likes web standards and accessibility but is happiest when up to her elbows in CSS. She is also a prolific knitter. You can find out more about Kate on her entertaining blog: http://www.katemonkey.co.uk/.

Every year the website that is a regular stomping groud for all proffesional web designers; A List Apart, runs a web survey to look at the current industry around the globe. Kate will be looking at the results from the most recent A List Apart Web Workers survey, to examine what it tells us about being a woman working in web design. Leave your preconceptions at the door as we have look at the industries and sectors that offer support for women in IT. Then expect a lively conversation afterwards.

Elsa Bartley, organiser of Nottingham’s Girl Geek Dinners has worked for nearly 10 years in the technology sector.

I’ve really enjoyed my professional career and I’d like to encourage more women into technology; I think we can bring a different perspective. I’m really looking forward to meeting other proffessional women and sharing experiences and expertise.

If you would like to know about future events or are interested in talking at Nottingham Girl Geek Dinners then you can find more information online at http://www.nottinghamgirlgeekdinners.co.uk.

Fedora 11 + Google Picasa

Thursday, July 9th, 2009

I use google picasa for my photos and the odd one I upload, but when i came to install it on a Fedora 11 install it wouldn’t let me login to the web galleries. Heres what i did to fix it.

If you’ve not already done so then install Wine. Now all you have to do is copy the wininet.dll.so file from /usr/lib/wine/ to /opt/google/picasa/3.0/wine/lib/wine/ overwriting the one that’s there.

It should now allow you to log in :)

Virtualbox + USB + Dell + Integrated Webcam

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

I currently have a Dell Studio 17 running Fedora 11, but there are times when i do need windows, so for this i’ve Installed my OEM windows that came with the machine into a virtualbox virtual machine. Works pretty good to be honest, but one thing i couldn’t get working was the webcam, the system just didn’t detect it. Virtualbox noticed that there were webcams available but wouldn’t allow me to select it, here’s what i did to get it working obviously change username to your actual username :)

1, create an entry in /etc/groups
usb:x:503:username

2, make sure username is in the vboxusers group
3, add this to the /etc/fstab
none /sys/bus/usb/drivers usbfs devgid=503,devmode=664 0 0

mount -a or reboot i'm not sure this part is necassary

This should now allow you to select the usb devices that virtualbox has detected then allow you to install drivers for them within windows. Worked for me…..

Lekhonee

Friday, July 3rd, 2009

Now that drivel has been removed from the Fedora11 repos I didn’t have an alternative blog poster, yeah I know i can update it various ways, but i like to use a desktop app. While reading the planet i noticed a few posts with a Lekhonee sig, so further investigation was needed.

yeah as usual yum install lekhonee installed it for me. Seems straight forward enough and i’ve written this post using it now.

I’ve just surprised myself with the amount of email addresses i currently have, i think i need to consolidate them and have one, currently i have

hotmail
gmail
yahoo
own hosted email about 4 here

Do i really need this many email addresses :) I think it’s time to close accounts :)

It’s a shame apps i use are linked to these, flickr for instance is linked to my yahoo account….picasa is linked to my gmail, is it time to go totally self hosted?

I’ve probably mentioned this sometime in the past so apologies if i’m repeating myself..
