Blogging Software

** UPDATE ** I’ve now found out that this is now old and unmaintained, which is a damn shame :(

Although i don’t update my blog that often, i do like to use a certain application, it’s called Drivel

blog1

It’s simple to install – yum install drivel and easy to use.  The only thing i came accross is that there is no default Journal type for a wordpress blog.  The workaround is as follows 1, select Journal type of “Movable Type” 2, use the url of your xmlrpc.php file in the server address, mine for example is http://www.paulmellors.net/xmlrpc.php

BLOG AWAY!

Shame that it’s not available in the standard SuSE repositories. It’s a PITA installing from source.

I prefer BloGTK (#2 is drivel, #3 QTM). BloGTK is available in the Fedora Repo too…and QTM has a yum repo for Fedora available through the OpenSUSE build service (Google for QTM and follow some links and you’ll get the repo file).

  3. Unfortunately, Drivel is a dead upstream. The author hasn’t responded to any requests for changes or patches in well over a year now, and the sources in SVN haven’t been touched in almost twice as long:

    http://svn.gnome.org/viewvc/drivel/trunk/

I was the maintainer for this software in Fedora and I finally killed it off in Rawhide about a month ago, meaning it will no longer appear in Fedora 11. It has a number of bugs logged against it which will never be fixed upstream, and since we generally don’t carry old, busted software in Fedora it was time for it to go.

There are some other GTK-based blogging aids available like gnome-blog and blogtk, but in general I’ve found you can get the same results from using the standard Text Editor (or your $EDITOR of choice), and using the superb web interface now available in WordPress. Drivel has no support for tagging, multiple categories, or any of the many other enjoyable and useful features in modern blogging platforms.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad tidings. :-( I know it’s painful to let go software you like — I maintained Drivel because I used it for a couple years myself. But there’s plenty of other great software out there and I encourage you to look for something you love — or maybe you’d like to fork Drivel and start a project of your own?
