I’ve noticed a problem with the Dell Studion 1737 and headphones under Ubuntu 8.10, if you plugin the headphones the sound doesn’t mute from the main speakers, pain in the neck if you’re wanting to listen to some tunes at work.
Here’s the fix (that worked for me)
edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base
add options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m6 to the end of the file
save, reboot and problem fixed

That solution is so obvious I can’t imagine how I didn’t think of it. And people say linux isn’t user friendly…

Hi!
I cant get it to work. I must have done something wrong… My alsa-base file looks like this:
options cx88_alsa index=-2
options saa7134-alsa index=-2
options snd-atiixp-modem index=-2
options snd-intel8×0m index=-2
options snd-via82xx-modem index=-2
options snd-usb-audio index=-2
options snd-usb-usx2y index=-2
options snd-usb-caiaq index=-2
# Ubuntu #62691, enable MPU for snd-cmipci
options snd-cmipci mpu_port=0×330 fm_port=0×388
# Keep snd-pcsp from beeing loaded as first soundcard
options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m6
What should I do?
Thank you.
Alternative solutions:
1. Smash the speakers
2. Listen to tunes on and MP3 player
3. Hook up a really BIG amp and speakers so everyone goes deaf then the noise from the laptop speakers won’t matter
4. My personal favourite. Ignore everyone’s complaint about your taste in music and Just Dance
Lol that\’s not even Chris Brown. It\’s a look a like.
