Fedora 10 + Broadcom Wireless

Sunday, January 11th, 2009

It seems my Broadcom wireless card isn’t detected properly in my Dell Studio 1737 on a default Fedora 10 install. Damn, but all is not bad news. Bring on RPM Fusion, a simple

su -c ‘rpm -Uvh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm’

and a

yum install broadcom-wl fixes it all….awsome

Now if only they would fix the bug in the kernel/pulseaudio/snd-intel so i could hear sound on it, that would be fab…..Bug 477954

Dell Studio 1737 + Headphone + Ubuntu Interpid

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

I’ve noticed a problem with the Dell Studion 1737 and headphones under Ubuntu 8.10, if you plugin the headphones the sound doesn’t mute from the main speakers, pain in the neck if you’re wanting to listen to some tunes at work.

Here’s the fix (that worked for me)

edit /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base

add options snd-hda-intel model=dell-m6 to the end of the file

save, reboot and problem fixed :)

First day back

Sunday, January 4th, 2009

It’s my first day back at work and i’m not really in the correct mindset at the moment, this seems to happen every christmas.  I think i need a holiday to get over my holiday.

On the experiment front, i’m using Vista at the moment on my laptop, i couldn’t go the whole hog and just use vista.  I needed my linux fix, so WUBI to the rescue, install ubuntu using this and i can use Ubuntu (when i need to) with out the need to partition as it runs on top (ish) of windows.

Hope you all had a good christmas and new year :)

ps. to the trolls who added stupid “you use windows so you must be a homo” comment, here’s my first “FUCK OFF TWAT” of 2009 :)
