Diggnation

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

I'm a fan of Diggnation, and i wanted and easy way of downloading and viewing them, i couldn't see anything obvious on the web but i notice one of the syndication methods included something called Miro, so i took a look at the screen shots and thought i wondered if this was included in Ubuntu, so i tried sudo apt-get install miro, woohoo there it was, ace :) Now i can download and watch diggnation at will :)

Moving away…..

Wednesday, March 12th, 2008

Today i'm having a complete reassesment of my operating systems on both my server and laptop. Here's where i'm going at the moment.

Laptop - Fedora

Server - CentOS 5.1

I have my reasons....job done :)
** UPDATE ** hmm that didn't last long, to many issues that i don't really have time to sort out so it's back to Debian/Ubuntu.

Vinagre Sour

Tuesday, March 11th, 2008

Forgive me if it's been changed and updated, but surely a program that's been made the default remote access tool in Hardy should actually work correctly?

What am i on about? Vinagre.

I was looking for a decent survey which would tell you what operating systems are most used, i was hoping it would confirm my thoughts about windows being the most used desktop OS. With this in mind, why can't vinagre CTRL-ALT-DELETE? Shouldn't this be one of the first things this app should be capable of? If your like me and need to control Windows machines [albiet reluctently] then this default is the first program that gets deleted and replaced.

This is, to me at least, worrying to think that the release people are letting this type of app out when it doesn't fully work. IMO [hay no offence to the developer, it's a great app]

Who do you work for?

Server distribution

Thursday, March 6th, 2008

I don't know if you're aware but i run my own webserver, i host a number of websites for family, friends and a couple of businesses. It tends to work well and i'm not having any problems with it :) I know from hanging around #ubuntu-uk and various forums that a lot of techies run their own systems, so i was wondering if you run your own server -

1. What is your server OS

2. What do you use your server for?

Sometimes it’s so flakey.

I've finally removed windows off the laptop and am devoting the whole machine to linux. I backed up what i could from the wifes partition [more about the what i could statement in a mo] and reinstalled linux on the whole laptop :) Brilliant.

What's this all about "what i could?", well before i backed everything i could up, i ran a virus scan, it was using mcafee. 47 virus/trojans/phishing cookies n various other crap on there....grrrr no wonder the laptop was going slow, i can't beleive the AV didn't pick these up, i can only assume that there was something wrong with it......damn..but i got what i could :)

I'm now a proud owner of a laptop that is dedicated to linux. At the moment i've picked Fedora to reinstall, but after playing with Hardy Heron, can see me swapping to that when it's released. But who knows.....

*UPDATE* Fedora doesn't actually do what i need, so it's back to good old Ubuntu Gutsy.  Until heron goes gold.
