setting up RSync over SSH with No Password

Friday, February 29th, 2008

Looking for how to set
up RSync over SSH so that you can run it in a cron job, or without
entering a password?

It's actually very simple. Just follow these few steps:

---- 1 ----

As the user you are going to be running rsync as, and on the machine you will be running rsync on, type: ssh-keygen -t rsa

Follow the prompts and use the defaults for the filenames it gives you.
Don't enter in a passphrase, otherwise you will still be prompted for a
password when trying to connect.

You should then have two new files in ~/.ssh, id_rsa and id_rsa.pub.

---- 2 ----

Open ~/.ssh/id_rsa.pub and copy the line in it to the
~/.ssh/authorized_keys file on the host you will be connecting to as
the user you will be logging in as.

---- 3 ----

Now try it out. Try ssh'ing from the host you created the id_rsa* files
on to the one you added a line to the authorized_keys file. You won't
be prompted for a password any more.

---- 4 ----

Voila!

Growth and Development

Friday, February 29th, 2008

For those that know me on #ubuntu-uk you'll know i've got no problems with Windows, Microsoft or the way they practice their business. However, i don't use them on my systems at home, BUT, my wife does. I dual boot my laptop with Ubuntu and Vista. Imagine my surprise when she states, rather loudly, "oh my god windows is slow, can you install linux?", *FAINT* :) So this weekend i'll be removing windows and devoting the machine to linux :) ROCKIN :)

My baby is growing.....:)

Hardy Heron

Monday, February 25th, 2008

Coz i was bored, i downloaded the Alpha5 version of the Hardy Heron and installed it onto my laptop, i'm sure there is something i can report, but to be honest it's only alpha and not that different [or so i can see] to the previous version of Ubuntu. I did notice a couple of things, default desktop background, what an improvement on the dull plain backdrops of previous releases.

From what i can see the default remote desktop viewer in Heron will be Vinagre, which is all well and good, BUT, i need to access and windows 2003 machine which is locked....er how do you send a CTRL+ALT+DELETE to the machine, er you can't. Surely if this is the default program it should actually perform what i think is a basic feature?

Other than that i'm liking what i'm seeing, then again it's only been on my machine a day and i'll need to play a little more. Actually one more thing, they've renamed Restricted Driver Manager to be Hardware Drivers, no wonder i couldn't find it :)

Baby Mellors

Tuesday, February 19th, 2008

I'd like to announce that Beckie and I are expecting our first child,  we went for our first scan yesterday [all ok] and the due date is Sept 2nd.  While i'm totally scared about the unknown, to say i'm excited and thrilled is an understatement.  However after reading about baby poo i'm starting to change my mind ;)

How Cluttered is your desktop?

Flickr

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

I did use flickr to display my photos, but last night i hit a snag, with the free account [to be honest i didn't read the site properly] you only get space for 200 photos....Oh great, flickr account closed. I thought to myself, i run my own webserver, why am i not running my own gallery software? Well i am now, i've installed the gallery2 software, it works a treat, i'm uploading my photos as we speak :) You'll be able to see my photos here [eventually]

I've been playing counter strike: source recently, and i wondered if it's possible to run it under linux. So off i go and install wine, install the steam application and waited for the download of Counterstrike: source.

Hour or so later once it's download i run the app. It doesn't run, bugger, keeps complaining about the registry in use.....grrr windows. However good ole internet comes to the rescue, cd to the Program Files folder and run :

chattr -R +S Steam/

Woohoo runs fine.....good times ahead.
