I've never liked KDE, for some reason it's always looked chunky. As KDE4 has just been released it thought i would give it an install on my laptop, i followed these instructions [which are so easy] and rebooted the machine, i can't beleive it, i actually like what i see so far. I think i'll need to play a little more before i make a totally informed decision, but for the moment, i like it.

Thursday, January 10th, 2008Went to get a joint account today with the wife, for bills and anything else really, one of the things i was shocked at is they didn't need to see any identification, apparently the banks have been granted access to extra databases so they can verify who you say you are. That's all well and good but they couldn't/didn't verify my picture, what i actually look like....isn't this a vital point of actually identifying someone?
Linux is fun
Thursday, January 10th, 2008Sometime i don't like computers, other times they just ROCK.
Picture the situation, my wife at the computer listening to music, i've not managed to copy all the music over from my backup server [i reinstalled the main machine] "but i want to listen to XXX and you're at work"
Aha, ssh to the rescue, login to my router find the ip of the machine, change the port forwarding so i'm connecting to the desktop, ssh into the machine and copy the music over...omg that's so kewl
I'm a hero again
I’ve got man flu!

Ubuntu - Widescreen
Monday, January 7th, 2008I've just installed Ubuntu Gutsy this morning and it looks really good on a 24" Monitor running at a res of 1920x1200
How much space have i got to play with
Playing DVD's and Videos full screen is bliss. Now if i could only afford some decent speakers to stop the buzz i've currently got.....grrr.
I've still got this idea of a Ubuntu-UK centric podcast running around my head, i think i'm going to have to start this idea rolling again.
Working Lates
Monday, January 7th, 2008The only thing i don't really like about my job is the late shift, it's 3:30 - Midnight. While the work itself isn't to taxing, it's the fact that i barely see my wife for the week. I get in at 12:45 so she's in bed, and when she get's up at 6:40am i'm asleep, to be honest it's not really nice. What i wouldn't give for a permanent 9 - 5:30. Is there such a thing any more?
New Year Resolutions
Sunday, January 6th, 2008One of my resolutions was going to be to blog everyday, well i failed that one didn’t I, it’s the 4th Jan and this is the only one i’ve done……
Hopefully i’ll be able to make a fresh start from today.
Outlook
Sunday, January 6th, 2008No not the email client:)
I’ve come to the conclusion i’m not a programmer, i wanted to code my own blog software, while i’m ok with the mysql stuff, adding to db’s etc it’s all the other stuff that i just can’t get my head round. I’ve been like this for years, i keep trying to learn but for some reason i just don’t have the brain make up for programming. It’s really wierd to be honest as i’m a damn good sysadmin, [to blow my own trumpet
], maybe it’s because i’m more interested in this type of work??
I think i’ll stick to system administration [until the next time i want to code something :)]
Non-Technical Server Setup
Sunday, January 6th, 2008All the setup guides out there that i’ve read assume a small bit of linux knowledge. I’m thinking of writing a guide, which assumes you have no knowledge whatso ever. It will cover the basics of a Linux installation, to installing AMP [apache, Mysql, PHP] components. It will also cover setting up websites. Configuring mailservers [exim] and FTP [proftpd?].
I know there are guides out there, but i want to do one of my own, possibly as a wiki so it’s also community edited. Perhaps there are things that you would like in this wiki?
