er well er that lasted about 30 mins, i just couldn't use it any more, is it actually finished? Where are all the config options? Can you actually configure anything? Why is it slow? When you add an icon to your desktop, can you stop it having that transparent black background?
I'm sorry the list goes on, it's just not for me. I think i'll wait for KDE10.

yeah kde4 is not finished, wait for kde4.1 it'll be about 20x better. install kde4. you should make sure systemsettings-kde4 is installed to config (and also right click the titlebar for window config)
you add icons by looking in the plasma config (right click desktop, config options).
i wouldn't be so quick to jump to it being awful, its not fantastic but neither was gnome 2.0 when it first arived.
