I’ve never liked KDE, for some reason it’s always looked chunky. As KDE4 has just been released it thought i would give it an install on my laptop, i followed these instructions [which are so easy] and rebooted the machine, i can’t beleive it, i actually like what i see so far. I think i’ll need to play a little more before i make a totally informed decision, but for the moment, i like it.

I’m experiencing exactly the same as you! It still won’t replace GNOME for me though. It’s not quite there IMO.
Hello Andrew
i think you hit the nail on the head, It’s not quite there, i’ll be sticking to gnome )
Subtly related, I’ve been playing with the Xubuntu 7.10 (Xfce) live CD, albeit fairly briefly. Most noticeably, its inbuilt compositor actually works on my computer (a ~9-year-old wreck); Compiz doesn’t seem to like my graphics card.
A few other niggles I have with Gnome—objects on non-full-width panels not sitting right in the corner (making Fitts’s Law cry); and new windows stealing focus—are fixed (or optional).
The calendar application, Orage, seems much sleeker than Evolution (which really needs splitting up into bits), and Orage’s panel clock is more customisable than Gnome’s (though the UI to do so could be improved).
File-type associations are the main problem I found. On the live CD, there don’t seem to be any applications that can open ODF documents; PNG images are opened by default with Thunderbird(!), and—especially given Thunar’s apparent lack of image thumbnails—including Eye of Gnome would have been beneficial (rather than having to view images with the Gimp).
Even from the live CD, on my computer, Xfce is quick.
